July 2010

Message from Superintendent:

Once again we are coming off a successful school year and are preparing for 2010-2011 to be just as successful! We have received preliminary results on our state report card covering Ohio Achievement Testing, Ohio Graduate Testing, graduation rate, and attendance rate. These preliminary results indicate that we passed 22 of the 26 areas and would be rated Effective once again this year. There are still other calculations that need to be addressed before results are finalized, but it appears we will continue to be Effective for 8 of the last 9 years and are closing in on our goal of being rated Excellent.

At the end of the 2009-2010 school year we had John Eschels (art teacher), Bev Mix (3rd grade teacher), and Alice Kuns (teacher aide) retire after years of dedicated service to the students in our district. Just recently Irene Wobser joined those three by announcing her retirement as well. Each of these employees will be missed and we are extremely thankful for their years of dedication and devotion to their students. We wish all of them the best!

Our PTO has raised funds to replace and repair playground equipment at the Elementary building. This project will be completed in July. We are extremely thankful for their support to enhance all aspects of our students’ education.

We will be replacing the two roofs this summer. We will be replacing the roof of the long wing at the Elementary building and we will be replacing the roof over the Media Center at the High School. Each of our buildings have membrane roof systems that must be managed and replaced over time. We will be using Permanent Improvement funds to pay for the roof replacements.

A Wind Turbine will be installed at the Elementary building this summer. Sure Energy has received grant funds and will donate the cost to construct and install the turbine. Sure Energy is currently waiting to receive final approval from Department of Agriculture for one of the grants. They anticipate that the approval will be coming soon. Construction will begin soon after the grant funds are secured. You may have seen a similar turbine in Huron east of the Rye Beach Road interchange with State Route 2. Their turbine services Woodlands Elementary building. Once our turbine is operational, we anticipate to save over $15,000 a year in electrical billings at the Elementary building.

We are also in the process of replacing our radio system for our transportation department. Our current radio systems in our buses were purchased in 1982. The Federal Government is modifying the deliver system of radio transmission effective in 2012 which will cause our radios obsolete. We will be using Permanent Improvement funds to replace the radio system.

Administration has been reviewing our curriculum for the 2010-2011 school year this summer. On August 6th the administration has meetings scheduled with staff to make roll out plans for changes in the curriculum for the 2010-2011 school year. We are excited for the anticipated changes that will improve our educational delivery systems for the coming school year.

We are waiting to hear from Ohio Department of Education on our financial status. We were told at the June Board meeting that ODE will be sending the Board a correspondence directing us to develop a corrective action plan to resolve our projected deficit for the 2010-2011 fiscal year. The deficit is estimated by ODE to be $451,602. The Board will need to submit a written plan to the department which will include either make further cuts and/or receive an advance in property tax dollars from the 2011-2012 fiscal year tax collection. The plan cannot include the anticipation of tax levy being approved. However, we are on the ballot on August 3rd for a 6.9 mill Emergency Property tax that if approved would generate approximately $1.2 million dollars annually. If the levy passes in August, we can respond to ODE that the additional tax revenue would resolve our projected deficit for the next fiscal year.

Ed Kurt,
Superintendent
Margaretta Local School District

The faire is the culminating activity for the students who had spent four weeks learning about and researching the time period. This event is a cross curricular unit in English, history, math and science. The students had to complete assignments and projects for each subject area to discuss and display at the faire.

The juniors and seniors in sociology class have just completed the game of Sociology Survivor (below). In this game the focus is on surviving as a effective and cohesive group. Each day the students are faced with a new challenge to overcome. Each of the challenges forces the students to cooperate with each other, communicate effectively and devise creative solutions all while incorporating sociological theory. The students are asked to set aside petty differences and break the bonds of their cliques to become the most effective society. This year for the first time ever the sociology classes have tied!

Margaretta Youth Compete at Western National Livestock Judging Contest

Four members of the Margaretta FFA recently competed at the National Western Livestock Judging Contest in Denver, CO. This team qualified for this National contest by their 3rd place finish in the State FFA General Livestock Judging Contest last spring. General Livestock Judging involves evaluation of Market Beef, Breeding Beef, Market Lambs, Breeding Sheep, Market Hogs and Breeding Swine. Students also have to defend their choices with oral reasons on some of the classes.

Ten classes were evaluated at the Western National Contest. These classes included three beef, three sheep, three swine and one goat class. Contestants had to give oral reasons on six of the ten classes. Margaretta’s team consisting of Courtney Balduff, Kaitlyn Eckert, Jerald Fitz and Karli Lane placed 9th overall in the contest. Specifically, the team placed 4th in Sheep, 7th in Swine and 10th in Beef. Individually, Karli Lane was 21st and Courtney Balduff was 28th. The coach of the team is Mr. Kevin Kremer. He is the Agriculture Teacher and FFA Advisor at Margaretta High School. Mrs. Melisa Balduff, Courtney’s mom was also at the competition as a chaperone.

SargentBrooke Sargent, oboe, auditioned for and was selected to rehearse and perform with the OMEA All-State Band. Close to 1,000 students submitted audition recordings to be a part of the All-State ensembles and they performed as part of the OMEA Professional Development Conference in Cincinnati on January 30th. This is a tremendous honor for our school band as only the very best musicians in the state of Ohio are selected for this ensemble.

Supply Lists for the 2010-2011 school year is available on the Forms webpage.

Mrs. Burkett’s first grade class read their way to success. The students were challenged to read and pass 500 Accelerated Reader Tests from December to May. The students passed that mark by the end of March. They didn’t stop reading and ended the year with passing 878 AR tests. The class also had a goal to have an overall comprehension level of 85%. They ended the year with an average of 91%. Each student met their individual goal of having at least an 80% comprehension level. The students were reward with an ice cream sundae party the last week of school. Below the students are pictured with the “BE AR Students” banner.

First grade teachers, Mrs. Burkett and Miss Solem had a friendly rivalry this year. Mrs. Burkett is a Jeff Gordon fan and Miss Solem is a Tony Stewart fan. They used the weekly racing results to review ordinal numbers. They also kept track of which driver had the better finish for that particular race. The students kept track using a tally chart. Then they turned the tally chart into a bar graph and a pictograph. Mrs. Burkett and Miss Solem also made sure the numbers 14 and 24 were a part of every math lesson. The kids had fun trying to figure out when those numbers would be an answer to a problem. Finally for the letter writing unit in language arts, the students picked one of the drivers to write to. Best of all, both drivers wrote back and sent large trading cards for the students. Below the students are pictured with their trading cards.

Margaretta Elementary’s 2010 Right to Read Week kicked of Wednesday May 26th with a visit from Ronald McDonald. The theme this year is Rock, Roll, and Read. Ronald really got the students excited about reading and they all had a great time. A little bit of magic and a lot of fun. The students are also doing a spirit week with games and prizes all week long. The week started off with a 1950’s day where they all wore 1950’s style clothes to school. There were a lot of poodle skirts on the girls and white t-shirts and jeans on the boys. The rest of the week consists of hat day, wear your clothes backwards day, sunglasses day, and it finishes off with tie dye shirt day. All of these activities are sponsored by the Margaretta PTO. Area businesses donated prizes for drawings for any students who read at least 1 book during the week. The importance of reading is the main goal for the week and the students having fun doing it is just the icing on the cake.
