Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome to our website! I am the High School Guidance Counselor for students that are in 10th, 11th and 12th grades. As the high school counselor I work with students in many different capacities. My hope is to use this website to deliver important information to you regarding the many services that we help provide to our students. If you have any questions regarding any of the information that I will be posting on this website feel free to contact me at (419) 684-5351.
So far this year I have conducted interviews with the seniors. These interviews consisted of reviewing transcripts, checking credits and exploring post secondary education options. After the interview, each student was given the opportunity to review his or her transcript.
On October 7, 2008, Mrs.Cullen and I conducted a Senior Scholarship / College Admission Informational session. During that meeting we reviewed information such as: the college visit procedure (click here to access this procedure), the procedure prospective student athletes need to follow regarding the NCAA Eligibility Center (click here to access a detailed procedure), ACT information (www.actstudent.org), college admission information (click here to access a list of Ohio Private & Public Universities & Colleges), information on the proper procedures to follow when applying for scholarships and financial aid information (www.fafsa.ed.gov).
On October 15, 2008, we gave the PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude/ National Merit Scholarship Qualification Test). This is an optional test that is offered to college bound juniors and a few Sophomores that show interest. This test gave students an assessment of their ability to do college work and compare to other juniors on the national level. For more information about the PSAT/NMSQT, visit www.collegeboard.com/psat.
We have several scholarship opportunities through our Guidance Department. These are placed on the daily announcements and each student has the option of picking up their own copy of the announcements in the Guidance Office. If you have any questions regarding this please contact Mrs.Cullen since she organizes the scholarship opportunities for our students.
Throughout the year we will have several college representatives here at the high school. When a representative is scheduled to visit, it is put on the announcements and the "High School News" tab on the homepage of this website. Students are then responsible to sign up for the visit in the guidance office. The day of the visit, each student that has signed up is given a pass to attend the presentation given by the representative. This is a great opportunity for students to have their questions answered and to learn more about prospective colleges.
In November or December each sophomore will have the opportunity to take the PLAN test. This test is designed to benefit the entire tenth-grade population. PLAN is a comprehensive assessment program that offers students, parents, counselors, teachers, and administrator’s information that can be used to help students plan and prepare for their future academic and career success. PLAN, like the ACT Assessment, is a curriculum-based instrument and is designed to measure skill development in the same four curriculum areas: English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science Reasoning. The experience of taking the PLAN test, combined with the sound course selection and appropriate and effective academic intervention, will help students perform their best when they take the ACT Assessment (www.act.org/plan). A predicted ACT score is provided. This test will be of no cost to the students, it will be given at the cost of the school. This is the fifth year that we will be giving it here at Margaretta and I am excited that is will be offered. This is a good opportunity for our students to improve their prospective ACT scores.
Please mark your calendars for January 21, 2009, at 6:30 p.m. A representative from BGSU/Firelands will be at the high school in the library to explain how to apply for Financial Aid. I recommend that all students with intentions of attending college participate with their parents. If this date does not work for you I have a list of all local meetings and you are welcome to attend one of those meeting. If you are interested in obtaining a copy of these alternative dates please contact me.
On January 29, 2009, our Sophomores will be going on a tour of EHOVE. This is an orientation and it gives students information about the programs that are offered at EHOVE.
I know it is a little early to be thinking about Spring, however I want to mention that on March 4, 2009. I will be having a Post Secondary Options (PSEOP) meeting. PSEOP is a program that was established through Senate Bill Number 140. This bill supports a program that awards high school credit and/or college credit to high school students enrolled in college courses. Next school year, appropriately qualified students in the ninth, tenth, eleventh and twelfth grades who are capable of doing college level work may enroll in PSEOP. Each college will set its own criteria for student eligibility. Interested students, parents, and guardians will be invited to this meeting in the high school media center. Invitations will be mailed to each students home closer to the date of the meeting.
Again, if you have any questions regarding the above information or if you have a school related concern for your child please feel free to contact me.
